As students, we often turn to social media as an escape from academic stress or as a way to stay connected with friends. However, what starts as a quick check for updates can quickly turn into hours of aimless scrolling, eating away the valuable time meant for studies, family, or other important activities. Social media is undeniably addictive, but there are ways to break free from its grip. In this article, I’ll share practical steps to help you regain control of your time and mental peace.
Why Are We Addicted to Social Media?
Before we tackle the problem, it’s important to understand why social media is so addictive. Every time we scroll through our feeds, our brain releases “happy hormones” like dopamine, endorphins, serotonin, and oxytocin. These hormones create a sense of happiness and satisfaction, similar to the feeling you get when someone compliments you. This instant gratification keeps us coming back for more, forming a cycle that’s hard to break.

Steps to Overcome Social Media Addiction
Acknowledge the Problem
The first step to solving any problem is admitting it exists. Check your phone’s digital wellbeing settings to see how much time you’re spending on social media and which apps consume most of your time. Acknowledging your addiction is crucial because only then can you work towards fixing it.
Know Your “Why”
Ask yourself why you want to reduce your social media usage. Is it affecting your mental health? Is it taking away time from your studies or family? When you have a strong reason (“why”), it becomes easier to find the “how” to overcome the addiction.
Alter Your Feed
Unfollow accounts or content that don’t add value to your life. If you find yourself repeatedly scrolling through irrelevant posts, it’s time to clean up your feed. Keep only the content that is useful or inspiring, such as educational YouTube channels for your studies.
Turn Off Non-Essential Notifications
Notifications are designed to grab your attention. Turn off notifications for apps that aren’t essential, like Snapchat streaks or gaming apps. This small change can free up significant time and reduce distractions.
Move Social Media to Your Desktop
If you can’t completely delete social media apps, try moving them to your desktop. Since phones are more accessible, keeping these apps on a less convenient device can reduce your usage. This way, you’ll only check them when absolutely necessary.
Challenge Yourself
Set a daily time limit for social media usage. For example, challenge yourself to use Instagram for only 10 minutes a day. Track your progress and gradually reduce the time. Over time, you’ll realize you don’t need these apps as much as you thought.
Try Something New
Replace social media scrolling with a new hobby or activity. Learn to play a musical instrument, try chess, or pick up a new skill. Compare the satisfaction of spending 20 minutes on Instagram versus 20 minutes learning something new. The latter will always be more fulfilling in the long run.

The 7-Day Screen Time Reduction Challenge
To help you get started, I invite you to take the 7-Day Screen Time Reduction Challenge. Here’s how it works:
- Day 1: Reduce your screen time by 10-15 minutes.
- Day 2: Cut it down further by another 10 minutes.
- Day 3-7: Continue reducing your usage daily.
Share your progress in the comments section. For example:
- Day 1: 30 minutes of screen time.
- Day 2: 20 minutes of screen time.
- Day 3: 10 minutes of screen time.
By the end of the week, you’ll notice a significant reduction in your dependency on social media.
Final Thoughts
Breaking free from social media addiction isn’t a one-step process. It takes time, patience, and consistent effort. If you slip up, don’t be too hard on yourself. Even reducing your usage by 5 minutes each day is a progress. The key is to stay committed and replace screen time with activities that truly enrich your life.
Remember, social media was designed to connect people, not to consume your time and mental peace. Let’s shift our focus from virtual validation to real-life growth and happiness.
